Originally ordered by the New York Central, but never accepted, the #5001 was obtained from ALCO in the new Lightning stripe livery in early 1961. This photograph was obtained from Bob's Photo and is used by permission.
#5001 is shown in the 'experimental' Yellow Nose scheme, laying over at Mechanicville on 9 March 1980. This locomotive is the only RS11 to be given the Yellow nose treatment, all others were given the all blue 'Altschul blue' scheme with a variety of lettering fonts. Jim Shaughnessy found RS-11 #5002 in Voohreesville, NY Industrial Park, August 18,1977, shortly after it was repainted in the solid blue paint scheme known as "Altschul blue" after Selig Altschul, then President of the D&H. Photo by Jim Shaughnessy, copyright ©1977. Used by permission.
Many years later and much worse for wear, the RS-11 #5002 is only days away from the scrapper as shown by the photograph taken by Dan Dawdy in the National Railway Equipment yard in Moline, IL where he was taking photographs for the NYSW June 22, 1995. Originally a high nose RS11, 5004 has had a 'nose job' by the fitting of a cut down high nose, which makes it unique, having much deeper notches and the sand filler on these notches. 5004 is showing its age, with the original paint job showing through the newer one. At E. Binghamton, NY in March 1987. Reproduced from a Bill Mischler slide ©copyright. Used by permission.
