Post CP Rail takeover "Riot of Colours". This photo shows D&H GP 38-2 7303, a "Calgary" rebuild with small cab shield and YELLOW side lettering, CP Rail SD40-2 778 (SOO) in the new "Double Flags" scheme, GATX SD40-2 2007 (on lease to CP, and soon to be owned by them) in original owner UP colours, and out of picture is CP Rail (SOO) SD40-2 748, heading for Kenwood Yard, Albany, NY in early 1995. 7304, another "Calgary rebuild" shows the start of the CP influence on the D&H locomotives with the horns being moved from the cab roof to the 'regular' CP position, in front of the front radiator fan. 7304 is shown at Saratoga Springs on a wintry day in February 1993. Taken from a Bill Mischler 35mm slide ©copyright and used by permission.
Before you get a little confused, the photograph shows unit #7307, which originally started life as Lehigh Valley #320, becoming D&H #7320, then Guilford #226, then rebuilt, repainted and renumbered to D&H #7307 by CP. This is one of several units that CP painted into the lightning stripe before all units were mandated to be painted in CP red. GP38-2 #7307 lays over at Buffalo's SK Yard in February, 1992. 7312 is named for D&H Road Foreman Bernie O'Brien (B.C. O'Brien) and is shown basking in the late afternoon sun at Kenwood Yard, Albany, NY in late October 1990. Photo and scan by Neil C. Hunter ©copyright.

D&H GP38 #7324 leads two NYS&W SD45s on eastbound BUME between Hornell and Gang Mills, NY in the scenic Canisteo valley. This line has been extensively rebuilt and singled but in April 1991 when this photo was taken the line was still displaying its Erie heritage with double track and semaphores. PAINT SCHEMES
Consensus is that every loco had the "potential" to be a bit different. That having been said, it seems there are 3 basic paint schemes during the dwindling years of the
D&H.
1) On arrival 1976, all units came in lightning stripe, series 7314-7325. Paint applied over former LV red tended to weather, fade, or come off in sheets, quickly...
2) Once reshopped, some units were painted all (altshultz) blue. Yellow lettering, white numberboards with black numbers; large yellow shield under cab window each side; zebra stripes on both ends; small shield on nose in middle of stripes; yellow stripe on side of walkways; handrails black stanchions with yellow rail; vertical railings by steps were yellow. Looks like under carriage was black. See (with magnifiers) p 96 of Plant & Plant (D&H In Color #2).
3) 1978 reshops, some of the reshops came out with yellow noses and a large yellow shield on the nose. No stripes on either end. Balance of paint job as #2 above. See p 71 Plant & Plant, and p. 15 & 32 Reiser (Bridgeline Blues)
4) In 1977, as a one-off scheme, #7325 seen with all blue body, silver trucks, no yellow safety stripe, and large yellow shield on nose. Fuel tank blue. Balance of paint job as #3 above. (See p 67 of Plant & Plant)
