The Best Type Of Juicer To Keep Your Diet On The Tracks

February 9, 2016 By Matt

juice

Juice extractors are not some craze, trend, or fad.  Over the past few years their popularity has surged as more people realize just how useful these small appliances can be in losing weight, improving your diet, and helping you undo years of poor eating habits.  We all know that we should be consuming a lot more fresh fruits and vegetables daily, but instead we often go for french fries and ketchup which can do more harm than good.  Juicing lets you enjoy the vitamins and minerals of fresh produce in a more convenient manner.

Drinking your veggies is a lot easier than constantly snacking on them for hours during the day. You can condense all of your daily requirements down into just one glass and enjoy all of the benefits in a hassle free process.  Getting a juicer for your home is a great way to improve the quality of your diet without feeling like livestock grazing on plants.

But what should you look for when shopping for a new juicing machine? What type of juicer should I get? Is it worth the price? These are all valid concerns that most people have when the first get into juicing. The best juicer is one that you look forward to using everyday and makes juicing a fun and worthwhile experience for you. If it is too much work, the juice tastes awful, it is hard to clean, or it takes too long, then you are less likely to stick with it and make it part of your routine.

Hopefully we can answer some of these questions for you so that you can find the perfect juicer for you and your family.

Centrifugal Or Masticating?

These are the two most common types of juicers that are geared to juicing fruits and vegetables. They both have their advantages and disadvantages so it is important to think about which style of juicer is going to be the beneficial to you.

Centrifugal Juicers

Advantages:

  • Speed – These are super fast juicers that have steel blades that spin at high speeds.  They will juice just about any type of food extremely fast.  If you are always in a hurry or don’t have a lot of patience this is they type of machine that you will want.
  • Price – Centrifugal machines are generally going to be less expensive than masticating juicers.  You can use the money that you save to buy extra produce to juice.
  • Easy To Clean – Not that masticating juicers are hard to clean, but these machines usually get very high marks from owners for hassle free cleaning.
  • Wide Feed Chute – What also makes these machines faster is that you don’t have to spend a lot of time preparing your food to fit into the machine.  They have large openings on their feed chutes that allow large sized fruits and vegetable to be dropped in.

Disadvantages:

  • Noise – To get a fast juicer you must sacrifice by enduring some noise.  These juicers have powerful motors that enable the blades to spin at high rates of speed.  This rapid spinning creates a lot of noise that can sound like a jet engine in the kitchen.  Probably comparable to the sound of a blender on a high setting.
  • Leafy Greens – These juicers are not ideal for anyone looking to juice a lot of kale or wheatgrass.  They will get some juice out of these types of vegetables, but they do not come close in juice yield to masticating machines.
  • Juice Quality – The fast speeds also have the drawback of introducing more oxygen into the juice which will cause it to spoil faster.  You should drink the juice right away as it will typically not keep that long.

Breville makes the absolute best centrifugal juicers and if you are interested in buying one of these types of extractors then this is the only brand name you should look at.  They will range from $100 up to $400.

Masticating Juicers

Advantages:

  • Juice Yield – This method of juicing breaks down fruits and veggies and then puts them under high pressure to squeeze the juice from the pulp.  For harder and leafy foods this will give you very high juice yield and ensures that very little goes to waste.
  • Juice Quality – This is also a slower method of juicing that doesn’t allow as much oxygen to get into the juice.  What this means is that the juice will stay fresher for longer allowing it to be stored in the refrigerator for a few days.  It also protects the nutrients from excess heat.
  • Quiet Juicing – In direct contrast to centrifugal juicing machines, these types of juicers are relatively quiet.  If you do not like to endure a noisy appliance then this is the type of juicer for you.
  • Leafy Green Vegetables – Masticating juicers are the very best option if you wish to juice a lot of kale, spinach, wheatgrass, chard, or cabbage.  This method works best with these types of foods.

Disadvantages:

  • Price – Masticating juice extractors tend to be more expensive and it is hard to find a quality machine under $200.
  • Speed – These juicers work at a slower pace so some added patience is required to take full advantage of everything that it can do.
  • Jamming – If you try to stuff too much down the narrow feed chute at once it may occasionally jam. This is something that you won’t have to worry about with a centrifugal unit.

Unlike centrifugal juicers, there are several good brands from which to choose when shopping for a masticating juice extractor.  Omega, Kuvings, Tribest, and Champion are some of the more popular brands in this area worth considering.

Is One Better Than The Other?

This is why many people have trouble picking their first juicer.  It all comes down to personal choice.  You have to determine which are the most important factors for your individual needs.  Knowing your budget, which types of foods you want to juice most, how much noise you can tolerate, and how much time you have to juice are all things that are vital to making the right decision.  The bottom line is that both types of juicers will offer you all of the benefits that juicing has to offer.  In this regard, it is important to not be paralyzed with indecision as you cannot make a wrong choice.

Getting a juicer can truly have a positive impact on your overall health.  Take the plunge and see for yourself.  Whether you are looking to drop some weight in the caboose or just have a better overall diet, juicing has a lot of positives that are definitely worth exploring.

Car Seat Safety Guide For Brand New Parents

November 12, 2016 By Matt

child-seat-help

While trains for the most part are one of the safest forms of transportation, travelling by car is completely different. Children do not need any type of special seat for a train, but every child needs to be buckled into a safety seat when in the back of your vehicle. For new and young parents, getting a child seat can be a burden. There are a lot of choices and not all of them are exactly cheap. This is where some guidance can really be useful. We have bought numerous different models over the years, not just for our children, but for our grandchildren as well. We understand the frustration of trying to find just the right option. So hopefully, if you are struggling making a decision or just want to know more about how to avoid some of the more common mistakes, our guide is for you.

Buying The Right Seat For Your Family

Below is what you should worry about when looking for a new seat and the most important factors when choosing.

Price – This is something that a lot of people fret over. They think if they get a budget model that it will be less safe. Odds are that this is not something that you should be stressing over. All car seats must meet certain safety standard so any seat that you see offered by a reputable store is sure to safe. They all are tested and must measure up to certain standards. The key here is to get something from a store that you can trust. There are several brand names that are known for making affordable options for parents. Names like Evenflo and Graco are two that you can count on even if you are not paying a lot.

Buy New – Getting a used seat is something that should always be avoided. Seats have expiration dates and you don’t know if you are purchasing a seat that has already been in an accident. Even if it looks okay you are still rolling the dice and the safety of your child is not worth the gamble just to save a few bucks.

Customer Reviews – The best place to learn about different seats to read all of the feedback from online stores from parents. If you want to find the best convertible car seat or the top rated infant seat within your particular budget then reading all the different reviews from parents who have experience with that model is a wise place to start. You can learn different things that can be extremely valuable when making the final decision. How easy a seat is to install, how comfortable it is for children, how heavy it is, and how simple is it to clean and maintain are just some of the things you should know about any seat before buying. This is an excellent resource for diligent shoppers.

After You Get Your Seat

So you have found the perfect infant or convertible child seat, now what? Using a seat properly is the next thing that you should master since this piece of equipment is going to part of your daily lives for the next few years.

Installation – Making sure the seat is secure and installed correctly is perhaps the most important thing you need to know before driving down the road. An improper installation can be just as dangerous as not using a seat. Read the manual, watch the videos, and have your seat inspected are the best three things you should do when you get that seat unboxed. If you get a brand name seat from the likes of Graco, Evenflo, Britax, Chicco, and Diono then there should be plenty of documentation online to help you get started. Some fire stations will also inspect the seat for you and help you out. If you are lucky enough to live in an area with a certified child seat technician nearby then this would be the way to go. They can guide you step by step and make sure you know what you are doing and feel comfortable using the seat.

Straps – Just as important as making sure the seat is secured to your vehicle in the right manner, the straps on the safety harness must also be in the correct position to avoid injury. Too loose, too high, or too low can all cause problems. This is something that a technician can help you out with as well.

Relax, It Gets Easier

Its natural to feel somewhat overwhelmed when it comes to having kids. You will be surprised with what exactly you can handle. Buying a new safety seat for newborn does not have to be an area of stress once you know what to look for. You will find something affordable that is just right for your needs and most importantly, you find a seat that is going to protect your child. Now exhale and get to it.

Cooking Healthy With A Toaster Oven

February 18, 2016 By Matt

toaster-oven-recipes

Toaster ovens are a convenient appliance to have in your kitchen as they allow you to make home cooked meals with less hassle than your conventional oven. Their smaller size has many advantages that will let you enjoy your food more. With generally less time needed to cook and preheat, these little countertop ovens can be huge time savers. They are a lot simpler to clean as it usually will only take a quick wipe down with a damp rag. If you are looking for inventive ways to eat better but are lacking the motivation because you think that it is just too much work, getting a toaster oven can help change all of that.

Basic ovens are pretty affordable, and even the higher end models that have useful features like convection cook settings can be purchased for under $300. While it may seem like a lot at first glance, the energy savings of using a smaller oven can help pay for it over the long run. This is something that we have gotten a lot of use out of over the last few years and it is probably been one of our better appliance purchases.

I would personally recommend researching current toaster oven reviews and picking up something that fits inside of your budget so that you can get cooking your own healthy meals. Modern countertop ovens are good for more than just toast and you may be surprised with all of the delicious meals that you can cook that are actually good for you.

Some Basic Toaster Oven Recipes

Most healthy diets allow you to enjoy healthy treats only in moderation as part of healthy lifestyle. However, if you choose oven baked recipes, you reduce your nutritional impact of indulgence. Baked foods are low in fat as a very little amount of oiling is required. If cooked at the right temperature and with the accurate ingredients, baked foods are rich in flavor and very juicy because they cook within their own oil.

Choosing oven baked recipes represent a healthy lifestyle choice and the possibilities are appetizing and endless: a creamy fish pie dressed with buttery mash, red mullet with baked tomatoes, vegetarian moussaka, a hot piping pie with crisp crust hiding an ale filling and a bubbling beef, Oven Fried Chicken, and Oven Baked Herb-crusted chicken among others. Here, I will take you through two healthy recipes that you can make in your oven; Chili Rellenos Casserole and Crunchy Oven Baked Chicken Toes.

Chili Rellenos Casserole

This recipe is great tasting and very easy to prepare. It is ideal for a busy weeknight and the perfect choice for a company.

  • Ground allspice: 1/2 teaspoon
  • Vegetable oil: 3 tablespoon
  • All-purpose flour: 1/3 cup
  • Eggs(beaten): 2 pieces
  • Honey mustard: 1/3 cup
  • Barbecue sauce: 1/4 cup

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  • In a shallow large dish, pour the cornflakes cereals and crush up with your hands. Mix the sugar, salt, bread crumbs, allspice, and pepper. Add the vegetable oil while tossing and turning to mix properly with the crushed up cornflakes and bread crumbs.
  • Put the chicken toes into the flour and turn. Again, turn the chicken into the beaten eggs and then into the crunchy breading. Place the chicken carefully on a nonstick baking sheet and put in the preheated oven. Bake for 15 minutes or just until brown all over and crisp.
  • Mix together barbecue sauce and honey Mustard in a small bowl. Serve hot chicken along with barbecue sauce and mustard honey for dipping.

These are just a couple of the countless recipes that you can make in a toaster oven. Just about any recipe that calls for the use of a conventional oven can be prepared in a countertop oven. If you do get one that has convection settings then you will have to lower the cook times a bit, but it is well worth it for the time you will end up saving in the kitchen.

Cooking your own meals is a great way to keep an eye on the food that you consume and it should be a part of any plan to turn around your diet. Having something that make this easier achieve is something worth pursuing. This is why we always recommend having a toaster oven in the kitchen, especially for those who think that making homemade meals is simply too much work.
